Hurricane Delta Flood Response
More than 7 inches of rain caused historic flooding in the Upper Chattahoochee Basin in Northeast Georgia. In the metropolitan Atlanta area, 3-6 inches of rain overnight caused significant flash flooding and quickly rising tributaries that pushed the Chattahoochee River at Atlanta to the NWS Major Flood Stage.
One of our urban streamgages at Peachtree Creek at Atlanta, which was moved temporarily due to bridge construction, was destroyed during the storm, as shown by the picture below. Other USGS gages have suffered some minor damage as well.
The Norcross Urban team had seven people active this weekend to collect 15 storm samples and fix gages, including: Andy Hickey, Ahmed Rhoni-Aref, Delaney McCullough, Jonathan Jason, Robert Randall, Kate Curran and Patrick Trent. The Urban team also had the Peachtree Creek temporary gage back operational by the end of Tuesday.
Four members from the Norcross Integrated Hydrology team made high flow measurements in the Upper Chattahoochee River basin on Sunday. The highest ever measurements at the Soque River near Clarkeville, and another very high flow measurement at the Chattahoochee at Cornelia gage were made by Jym Chapman and Skylar McHenry, while Dennis Kluesner and Javier Spencer made high-flow measurements at the Powers Ferry and Vinings gages at levels not seen since the epic 2009 Atlanta floods.
